Wengen has some excellent mountain restaurants where the owners delight in providing high quality meals and abundant portions. The only thing to be wary of is that they can get busy at peak times so it’s best to try to lunch before noon or after two if you can, some also allow advance booking.
The Berggasthaus Männlichen (+41 (0) 33 853 10 68) is located above the village. As well as a full menu in the restaurant it operates a snow bar and offers grilled snacks on the terrace.
The Restaurant Allmend (+41 (0) 33 855 58 00) close to the Innerwengen chair is also good.
The Roestizzeria restaurant (+41 (0) 33 828 78 28; bahnhof-scheidegg.ch) is located at Kleine Scheidegg railway station 2061 metres and has a full menu of tempting alpine treats.
Other popular spots include the dining room at the Jungfrau Hotel up on the Wengernalp for high calibre cuisine.
The Eigergletscher, the region’s highest restaurant up at 2320m is also good, with, if it’s possible, even more stunning views than the rest.
Wengen has about 20 places to eat, most of them hotel restaurants, but the resort does manage to pack a lot of options in from simple fast food outlets through to gourmet.
There are several Italian options including the cosy Ristorante Pizzeria Steakhouse Da Sina (+41 (0) 33 855 31 72) which, slightly ironically given its comprehensive name, has a strong reputation for its fish dishes as well as the pizza, pasta and steak. The majority of the restaurants serve good Swiss-cheese based dishes, but the Arvenstübli (+41 (0) 33 856 77 77) is a particular specialist, with its other specialities including Bernese Rösti or "Bernese Oberland beef" entecôte.
Among the half-dozen gourmet options Jack's Brasserie offers superb food with gleaming silver cutlery, white linen table cloths and glittering chandeliers. The Restaurant Schönegg offers a more intimate experience by candlelight in a wood panelled room, surrounded by valuable antique furniture.
With a high proportion of hotel beds, Wengen doesn’t need a huge amount of grocery outlets but there are half-a-dozen, so self-caterers can find what they need, all of which should be within an easy stroll of your accommodation.
Chäs Gruebi (+41 (0)33 855 11 45) is a predominantly dairy retailer with a great range of cheeses, and there are two bakeries, Pfluger (+41 (0)33 855 15 35) and Vincenz (+41 (0)33 855 42 44).
The Frischmarket (+41 (0)33 855 14 51) has a good selection of dairy and grocery items and and there’s also a small Co-op supermarket.
