Like many French resorts Vars is keen to promote the less automated side of snow sports with snowshoeing and winter hiking both popular. So too is dogsledding and the local ‘Mush and Co’ team (+33 (0)6 48 39 29 66; mushandco.com) led by Laurent Prochwiez from his base down in Vars Sainte Marie is a popular attraction. Meeting at the top of the Ste Marie chairlift the company offers first time treks, special dog sled excursions for children, themed evenings and night time excursions as well as longer trips by arrangement.

Shopping

There are around 40 shops in Vars, most in Les Claux, and most of those food or ski shops. There are however souvenir shops too of course, as well as outlets for holiday essentials. Most are located in two small malls.

Capucines (Le Point Show; +33 (0)4 92 22 35 62) is a nice souvenir shop, Le Book’Tin (Rés. Le Seignon; +33 (0)4 92 46 51 35) is the place for magazines, books and souvenirs. Try Tam Tam Photo (Immeuble le Schuss; +33 (0)4 92 46 59 59; tamtam-photo.com) to fulfil your photographic needs.
