Getting to Tignes by Plane, Train or Car

,

Sun 01 Dec 2024 - Sun 08 Dec 2024

Linked to Val d’Isere, Tignes benefits from the quality transport links of the Tarrentaise Valley, but involves a comparatively longer transfer due to its remote location. Before entering the resort you will drive up over the dam, and pass over the old village of Tignes, which was flooded in the 1952 to create the dam. It is still possible to see the remains of the old village in the summer, when the lake (Lac de Chevril) is drained every 10 years for maintenance of the dam.

By Train

The daily arrival of trains into Bourg Saint Maurice Station, half an hours drive away, makes train travel to Tignes a fairly attractive option. If travelling at the weekend, there is a direct ski train to Bourg St Maurice that leaves St Pancras on Saturday morning and arrives into Bourg St Maurice later that evening. For those who prefer skiing to sleeping, there is an overnight ski train that leaves on Friday night and arrives at about 10am the following morning, leaving an extra half day on the slopes either side of the week. The ski train is operated by Eurostar.

If travelling mid-week, you can also reach Tignes by train. You will need to change from Gare du Nord in Paris to Paris Austerlitz for the direct TGV service to Bourg St Maurice, and then arrange a transfer up to resort.

Self-Drive

It’s possible to drive to Tignes in a day. However, it does take a good 8-10 hours from Calais, depending on the conditions. The scenery as you climb up the valley from Bourg St Maurice is spectacular; often the inclines on the eastern side of the valley produce avalanches that wipe out huge areas of trees.

It can sometimes be very slow going on the climb up from the valley floor to Tignes, especially in poor weather. To combat this try to avoid the busier times at the weekends and during peak holiday season, and make sure you leave yourself enough time.. Be aware when the snow is particularly heavy police often check for cars without chains or snow tyres, you won’t be allowed you to proceed if you’re without either, so snow chains really are a must. ViaMichelin has good directions.

Arriving into Tignes you’ll find around 3000 parking spaces of which some is covered, and therefore chargeable, and some free outdoor. Be careful in town with the parking restrictions, as the Gendarmerie in Tignes really will enforce the rules and aren’t averse to towing the odd car, an infuriating €80 fine! To park on the street you will need a permit, available from the tourist office, so either make sure you have one or avoid leaving your car on the street at all costs.
