There is a wide selection of places to eat in Tignes both up on the mountain and in the village. There areas with the best choice of restaurants are Tignes Le Lac and Tignes Val Claret.
Most of the mountain restaurants in Tignes are cafeteria-style establishments where you can refuel quickly without having to eat into your ski day too much. However, there are a couple of higher end places where you can enjoy a leisurely gourmet meal. Otherwise, it’s very easy to just pop back to one of the many eateries in resort.
With an excellent location at the top of Tovière where the Aeroski arrives, this popular self-service restaurant is a great lunch or hot chocolate stop for those heading over to Val d’Isère. If it’s cold out, you can warm up in front of the fire, or on sunny days enjoy the fantastic views from the terrace (+33 (0)4 79 06 35 05).
On the other side of the valley at the top of the Chaudannes chairlift, Lo Soli (+33 (0)4 79 06 07 42) is a charming chalet style restaurant with exposed stone walls, wooden beams, roaring log fire and a fantastic gourmet menu. It also has a great sun terrace that looks out over the Grand Motte glacier and a self-service area for those who’re eager to get back on the slopes as quickly as possible.
Up on the Grand Motte glacier, at the top of the funicular, Le Panoramic (+33 (0)4 79 06 60 11) is one of the resort’s best mountain restaurants and has both self and table service sections where you can enjoy great food and incredible views of the surrounding area.
Tignes has a good range of restaurants to suit all tastes and budgets, with the majority being located in either Tignes Le Lac or Val Claret.
Le Pignatta (+33 (0)4 79 06 32 97) is a lively Italian restaurant in the centre of Val Claret that serves a great range of pizza and pasta dishes as well as Savoyard specialties and excellent steaks. They also cater well for vegetarians as well as kids, so it’s a great place to take the whole family.
One of the coolest places to eat in town is Couloir (+33 (0)4 79 06 32 64), which is situated right in the heart of Val Claret, just across from Hotel Le Ski d’Or. Also one of the resort’s top spots for après, this bar/restaurant serves excellent quality, creative cuisine that’s a refreshing change to the cheese heavy traditional dishes that are served in the majority of alpine restaurants. There’s also a cocktail and tapas bar on the top floor where you can enjoy an aperitif and a light bite. Once you’ve finished eating, head to the downstairs bar to enjoy the evening entertainment.
For good, unpretentious Savoyard cuisine, try La Chaumière in the Hotel Village Montana, in Tignes le Lac. This cosy, rustic restaurant is great for families and has a special kids’ menu.
Just next to Couloir is Le Caveau (+33 (0)4 79 06 52 32), a warm and ambient underground restaurant that serves some of the finest cuisine in Tignes. Its varied menu features creative international dishes that will satisfy the most demanding of foodies. The restaurant has two sittings, one at 7.30pm and another at 9.30pm, and it’s advisable to book ahead. If you opt for the later sitting, you’ll be able to stay at the table to enjoy the live entertainment, usually a Blues band, which kicks off later on.
Another good option for fine dining is La Table en Montagne inside the five star Suites du Nevada. Top chef Jean Michel Bouvier, who also runs Le Panoramic restaurant on the Grande Motte, uses the finest local ingredients to create delicious dishes that offer a sophisticated take on traditional Savoyard cuisine. In keeping with the menu, the restaurant’s interior incorporates rustic wooden features in its otherwise contemporary décor to provide a setting that’s both chic and atmospheric.
If you fancy something a bit different, Daffy’s Café in Val Claret is a lively Tex Mex restaurant that serves the usual nachos, fajitas and burritos as well as burgers and salads. After dinner head to the bar where you can party until late.
In part due to the high number of self-catering apartments, there are several dozen food retailers in Tignes, so wherever you stay you should not be too far from the grocery shops you need.
