Whether or not you’re a spa lover, Les Grands Bains du Monetier (+33 (0)4 92 40 00 lesgrandsbains.fr) is an excellent facility that really deserves a visit during your stay. The baths are divided in to several sectors, including the Grands Bains zone which has a huge outdoor pool covering 300 square metres and incorporating lots of water features such as a river chute and fountain water jets. The indoor pool is a similar size and fed by naturally heated hot water. It has a Jacuzzi, water-massage course, bubble beds, underwater shower columns and micro-bubble zones. Surrounding the indoor pool are traditional Roman bath features (frigidarium, tepidarium, caldarium), a steam room and a musical grotto! The other two sectors are aimed at adults looking for more of a health and beauty spa experience and are described in the spa section.

There are more than 100 places to shop in the valley but remember these are spread between the 13 villages, although most of course concentrated in the larger centres, particularly Briancon, which has a very pleasant old centre delightful to wander around ‘browsing.’ Most of the rest of the shops are in the three main villages (Chantemerle, Monetier and Villeneuve) and although these are primarily made up of food and ski shops – comprising two-thirds of the total – there are also all the ski holiday essentials to be found including chemists, newsagents and several souvenir shops at each. Local arts and crafts, which appear to be thriving in the Valley and wider region, are also quite well represented with local outlets at each village.
