As you’re staying in the home of former World and Current Olympic champion Sylvie Becaert, and in the resort that is the first in France to host World Cup Biathlon - a sport largely dominated, other than by the French, by Scandinavian, Russian and Germanic competitors) it would be a little rude not to try out this exciting sport at the resort’s new stadium. For those not in the know, biathlon involves cross country skiing with a rifle, racing in the proper event. You then arrive at a shooting range with you heart racing and body shaking from the exertion, but must then hold your rifle steady to hit five distant target from a standing or lying down ‘prone’ position. Fortunately for those who are novice on cross country skis or with a rifle the resort’s cross country ski school (+33 (0)4 50 02 78 17) offer a whole range of biathlon experience for children, families or adults that are both fun and rewarding.
Although most of the shops in the two villages are ski stores or food outlets, there is still a good choice of gift shops too and indeed some of the regional food emporiums or worthy of a lengthy browse over the local delicacies in any case. Le Grand Bornand Village has a slightly larger choice of shops than Chinaillon but both have an above average selection. In Le Grand Bornand Village, Passionnément (+33 (0)4 50 02 25 62) and Diva Altitude (+33 (0)4 50 02 24 98) are both good gift shops, in Chinaillon Label Montagne is the main gift shop while Flocons d’arômes (+33 (0)4 50 27 00 66) is the village’s parfumerie.
