Given its size, Valmorel still has a respectable range of dining options varying from the traditional Savoyard to international cuisine, as well as good shops for local produce.
There are five places to eat on the mountain. L'Alpage (+33 (0)4 79 09 83 81) at the top of the Altispace chairlift on the link with Saint François Longchamp has good food and great views of Mont Blanc. L’Altipiano at the top of the Pierrafort gondola (+33 (0)4 70 09 86 31) has a pleasant lounge and, useful if you’re skiing with children, a play area where they can burn off yet more energy.
There are about 18 places to eat, most in the village centre or at the base of the slopes. For Savoyard specialities try La Marmite (+33 (0)4 79 09 83 19).
If you’re after something a little less French, Le Jimbo Lolo (+33 (0)4 79 09 82 13) recreates a South American atmosphere and serves up Tex-Mex cuisine. La Table Du Berger (+33 (0)4 79 09 81 94) is one of several serving pizza.
If you’ve got the energy, there’s the option of an evening snowshoe hike to a traditional mountain restaurant in the forest (+33 (0)4 79 09 85 55), the Aigle Blanc, for a traditional Savoyard meal. Head torch and snowshoes are provided.
There are half a dozen places to buy your groceries in Valmorel, with several speciality food shops and a couple of small supermarkets.
Shops selling regional cuisine include La Ferme aux Gourmets (+33 (0)4 79 09 85 52) which is also a good option for wine, and the local dairy co-operative, Coopérative laitière (+33 (0)4 79 09 82 71) which is the place to buy you Beaufort cheese and other produce of the Savoie region.
The main baker in town is La Laurentienne (+33 (0)4 79 24 17 70). The supermarkets are Le Pot à Lait - Spar (+33 (0)4 79 09 81 63) and a Superette Sherpa (+33 (0)4 79 09 81 15) which offers online reservation of your groceries for collection on arrival.
There’s also a Super U (325 Rue de la Petite Prairie; +33 (0)4 79 24 23 14) minimarket in nearby Bellecombe.
