Englishwoman Hilary Sharp, author of the main English-language guide to snowshoeing and half a dozen other guides to trekking and walking in the high mountains of Europe, has been running her Trekking in the Alps (+33 (0)6 82 65 42 1 trekkinginthealps.com) operation from Vallorcine for more than 20 years. Trekking in the Alps offer snow shoeing weeks throughout the winter from January to April with options ranging from day walks from a hotel base to overnights in on-mountain accommodation with the aim of exploring the best of the mountains in winter far from the crowds.

“Snowshoeing can be done at all levels, from gentle strolls in the valley to challenging summit ascents, and everything in between. If you enjoy walking then you'll enjoy snowshoeing, you just need regular hiking clothing and boots,” says Hilary.
