Overview of Saint Gervais Ski Resort

When you take a St Gervais-les-Bains ski holiday you’ll discover it is a pleasant old spa town at the base of Mont Blanc, Western Europe’s highest mountain that has been welcoming visitors since 1806 to take the curative waters. Skiers have not been arriving for quite that long, but they have been coming here for more than 70 years, since the 1930s.

Sandwiched between two classic French resorts – sophisticated, exclusive Megeve and world mountain sports capital Chamonix, St Gervais is part of the largest lift-linked ski region in the Mont Blanc area and also part of several regional passes, the largest of which encompasses the aforementioned resorts along with Courmayeur in Italy, the Swiss 4 Valleys around Verbier and another eight ski villages in the area.

St Gervais today is a fairly large, year-round centre compared to many French ski villages, with a permanent population of more than 5,000. However it is also quite a peaceful, historic place with a lovely old centre and a year-round identity that does not rely on winter sports so much, making it a pleasant choice for those wishing for something more in their winter holiday than just downhill kilometres.
In the modern era, the resort’s spa has been popular for a little over two centuries, although there are records of it being known of and used back in Roman Times. The spa’s history is one of evolution through the years to the current superb facility for both health and wellbeing, and medical treatments (see Spa section).
