There are five mountain restaurants above Montgenevre and of course the potential to reach many more if you ski over into Italy. Most of the local establishments are self-service cafeteria types with wide terraces to enable you to get out and soak up the sunshine that’s here for 300 days a year. La Bergerie (+33 (0)492 21 81 06) is one of the most popular with Les Chalmettes (+33 (0)492 21 93 04) or Les Anges (+33 (0)614 61 97 52), also recommended. It’s also easy to ski back to the resort’s snow front for lunch in one of the restaurants at the edge of town or just go back to your apartment for a bit of baguette and butter if you want to save your Euros.
There are more than a dozen restaurants in Montgenèvre, most blending traditional French food with the influence of nearby Italian culture.
If you don’t fancy strolling the kilometre or so over the border in to Italy, Le Capitaine (+33 (0)492 21 89 84) brings Italian food to you with a great pizza selection – it’s one of several pizza places in town. Alternatively La Ca del Sol (+33 (0)492 20 53 11) and Le Jamy (+33 (0)492 21 92 62) are both good for traditional French mountain meals such as fondue.
La Table Blanche restaurant in a member of the Leading Small Luxury Hotels of the World Association, and is the best choice for gourmet dining.
There is a small selection of food and grocery shops in the village.
For your daily baguette and croissants head to the Boulangerie Petit (+33 (0)4 92 21 93 28), one of several, while Pral (+33 (0)4 92 21 93 68) is a combined butcher and deli specialising in local produce and mountain food favourites, again one of several similar shops. There are also several local farm food producers with outlets in the village.
The small Sherpa (+33 (0)4 92 21 95 07) and Vival (+33 (0)4 92 21 93 68) are two of the three small supermarkets which should cover all other food and drink needs. There’s also a weekly market.
