Overview of Flaine Ski Resort, France
Flaine ski resort sits at a snow sure altitude in a vast powder snow bowl and at the heart of the huge Grand Massif ski region, one of the world’s largest. If you enjoy a Flaine ski holiday you’ll find the resort’s ski area links the purpose-built centre with the traditional villages of Sixt, Samoens, Les Carroz and Morillon down below. There are numerous fabulous long trails down to these villages at the edges of the giant ski area and those apartment blocks are actually an art installation with all the services you need close at hand within.
Flaine was created in the 1960s and while its original stark concrete block architecture has been criticised along side those of others, it is actually something very different, created by a master of the Bauhaus school of architectural design.
The core of the resort is on a split level, known as Flaine Foret and Flaine Forum, the two connected by pedestrian lifts, More recent developments have included the wooden chalets of a Scandinavian-style village (known as Le Hameau de Flaine) and now a development Flaine Montsoleil initiated by the Canadian company Intrawest, the team behind Whistler and other resorts, the more North American style Flaine Montsoleil, now operated by the large French Pierre and Vacances company.
