Giant Snow Dome to be Built in London

If you love skiing and snowboarding and you live in London then this is very exciting news for you! New plans to transform the Stratford Olympic Park into the largest indoor snow dome in the UK have been announced by London’s Mayor, Boris Johnson. Shopping centre developers Westfield are to fund the construction of the huge indoor ski centre that's to be up and running by 2015 and will cost £200m. This will mean that London city goers will no longer have to trek all the way out to Milton Keynes to get to the snow.

It's to be double the size of the snow domes in Hemel Hempstead and Milton Keynes and will rival that of the world's largest indoor ski resort in Dubai. So far, we know the plan is to build numerous runs of varying difficulty, the longest of which will be double the length of the next biggest in Britain at 300m, equating to 20,000m2 of piste. The indoor ski resort will also boast toboggan runs and play areas for children in the snow called snow-zones, as well as an ice rink, après ski bars, shops, restaurants and even a hotel!

This is great news for skiing in the UK as the new indoor ski resort hopes to attract over three million visitors a year and will make skiing and snowboarding much more accessible to London city goers. It’s a fantastic opportunity for British winter sports to build on the growing success of our professional skiers and snowboarders with James Woods’ podium finish at the X Games last year, Billy Morgan’s win at this year’s London Freeze festival and Jamie Nicholls’ 5th at the US Open this year.
