Winter has officially arrived in the Alps this weekend with snowfall reported throughout the Alps and heavy snow forecasted set to continue throughout this week. Imagine our excitement this morning when we were bombarded with the news of heavy snowfalls from our European partners. However the excitement was short-lived after seeing today’s Metro front page and website blazoned with a poorly-researched article about the snow situation in Europe.
Firstly, let’s put some perspective on the situation. It’s the beginning of December and perfectly normal not to have snow yet. In fact, it’s usually a far better sign for a good season when the snow starts to fall from early December. To give an accurate picture of the situation, Chamonix reported considerable snow this weekend with 50cm more on its way this week and the ski lifts are scheduled to open, as planned, on 17th December. The Meribel Tourist office confirmed this morning that conditions are shaping up well with 40cm of snow reported this weekend with another 40cm on its way this week. Alpe D’Huez have also had decent snow already and are opening this Thursday 8th December.
This photo was taken in Val Thorens today (Monday 5th December). The slopes are open and ready for action!
It's a similar situation in Switzerland with our friends at Klosters Tourist office sharing the news of fresh snow in Klosters with more on the way.

So Mr Metro - all we can say is that you'd better dig out that ski gear after all!
