Beneath the magnificent peaks of the Mont Blanc Massif lies the world famous alpine town of Chamonix. And to let you in on some Chamonix secrets - and to find out exactly why it’s so well-loved - we went out and made this little film.
Originally a destination for summer mountain climbers, it now tops the ‘must-visit’ list of so many snow sports enthusiasts. Above the vibrant town there's the most incredible mix of ski areas, and as we've tried to show, so much more than just high peaks and a few steep runs.
Chamonix is definitely a resort for skiers and boarders looking for a challenge, with a huge range of great black runs - and of course the infamous 22km Vallée Blanche. Tackling this renowned off-piste run begins after a fairly intense walk from the cable car to reach the start of the run, where you begin your descent through the majestic scenery. We'd always recommend hiring a guide to ensure your safety, as sadly there are a very small number of fatal accidents. The run ends with a testing trek up lots of stairs back to the cable car - just in case you thought things were getting easy!
But in this clip we also wanted to make sure you got a glimpse of the wide, gentle slopes of the Balme area: a haven on the mountain for beginners, families, or simply those looking for a chance to slow down and enjoy the view.
Although it's mainly the skiing that gets us so excited about Chamonix, there's definitely not a lack of attractions to keep us entertained off the slopes. The fantastic shopping, lively nightlife and excellent, varied cuisine on offer all add to the ambience, and help to create the feeling of an authentic alpine town with so much going on it almost seems too good to be true. Try the hip Le Bistrot for fabulous, one-of-a-kind dishes and a great wine selection, and then head Choucas for a great evening vibe - often from dusk to dawn.
The journey from Geneva usually takes just over an hour, which makes Chamonix pretty much perfect for a long weekend or short break. The frequent bus service in the resort also made it easy for us to enjoy everything this awesome and very unique place has to offer. We've got accommodation to suit all budgets - so check out our clip and then have a look at our great selection of Chamonix hotels and apartments!
